Aftercare

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER THE INITIAL PIERCING?

- After the initial piercing for at least the first few weeks, there will be some localised swelling, pain, tenderness, discharge of a clear or cloudy fluid, bruising and bleeding.
Discharge can persist for several months with slow healing piercings.

- All the above is normal, you experience all of these or none of these. Above is just how your body is dealing with a fresh piercing.

- Do not touch, twist, pick or apply any creams to the piercing. If you do have any concerns please contact the studio directly.

HOW DO I CLEAN MY PIERCING?

- Either use a sterile saline solution, or you can use some fresh cooled boiled water. Do NOT use salt in the water. Salt, if too much is used can dry the skin and irritate the piercing, same with any aftercare products that have alcohol in them.

- When applying the aftercare be very careful not to move the jewellery or twist it. Do not remove the jewellery. Doing either of the above things can disrupt the formation of new skin cells, delaying the healing process and potentially causing bumps.

- Fresh/healing piercings do need to be cleaned twice daily in order for them to stay healthy.

SOMETHING ABOUT A CHECK UP?

- When you are first pierced we do install a bar that is a little longer at the start, this is to give the tissue enough room to swell up and then to go down.
Once the swelling has subsided you must return to the studio to have a shorter bar fitted so your piercing can continue to heal well. Failure on your part to do this can result in lumps, bumps and migration that may not be fixable.
As we all heal at our own pace we will try to give you a rough idea on when to pop back in. This is one of the most important steps for your piercing to heal perfectly.

- Usually around 2-3 weeks for a usual downsize, some people do need a downsize after 1 week, please keep an eye on the piercing and get in touch when you notice that a downsize is needed.

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MY PIERCING?

- Complications can occur at anytime and this is usually nothing to be worried about but it does need to get seen to right away for the best advice. Please if you are concerned about anything get in contact with us ASAP. You can email over or message a few clear images on the piercing and a description of what is happening. With photos please do NOT use your hands to move or push the jewellery out of the way, this can be a reason as to why there is an issue.

- Lumps around the piercing can be caused by getting knocked, or the jewellery getting touched, moved or played with. As soon as you noticed any red lumps forming please get in touch with us and we will do our best to help.

- Signs of potential infection are extreme heat, redness spreading outward from the wound site, extreme swelling, severe pain, thick green or yellow discharge seeping from the piercing, nausea or a fever.
Infection is rare and it’s even rarer when you follow the correct aftercare and practise regular hand washing, however it is possible. If you do believe you do have an infection please contact us ASAP we will advice on the next best step for you. If you feel like it is an emergency and cannot wait for our advice please do not hesitate to go and get it seen to by a doctor.
